Step One  - Self Assessment & Reflection

  1. What do you want? Look underneath the surface.
  2. Identify your goals. Get input from an objective outsider that you trust.
  3. Clarify your values and criteria for satisfaction at this time in your career.
  4. Identify obstacles.  Challenge assumptions. Avoid self-sabotage.

Step Two – Plan, Network and Prepare

  1. Sketch out a short-term plan; keep open-minded. You will often need to shift paradigms.
  2. Learn the skill of networking. Don’t assume you know it all. If introverted, work with your coach to handle it the way it works for you.
  3. Formulate your “story” and your networking approach BEFORE you network.  Work with your coach on this.  It takes verbal practice and hashing it out. Don’t underestimate the importance of this story.
  4. Get comfortable with ambiguity. Prepare for emotional ups and downs.
  5. Expand your networking.  Keep at it.
  6. Take concrete steps.  Begin creating a resume, knowing that it will evolve.
  7. Explore. Learn. Gather information.

Step Three – Test the Market, Test your Resilience, Take Action

  1. Find job postings that are of interest. Find contacts who are familiar with the role and organization.
  2. Get help emailing your resume to the right person(s).
  3. Practice fundamental interviewing even if you are an executive. It pays to prepare. Find a coach and go through a mock interview – what you find out about yourself will surprise you.
  4. Get honest feedback about your communication style and EQ (emotional intelligence); these can make or break an interview. Refine.
  5. Take risks and make effective choices about your time and energy. Spend time on activities that will be of value to your transition. Hold onto your personal power.
  6. Periodically reassess your strategy and your stress level.  Get objective input.

Step Four – Make Choices Based on Truth not Fear

  • Get clear on your criteria for job satisfaction. Conduct an honest assessment of whether a potential job offer is right for you.  Ask your coach to keep you honest.
  • Prepare your negotiation strategy.  Get input from your coach.
  • Do your due diligence. Pay attention to red flags. Talk it through with your coach.
  • Don’t assume you have an offer before you get it.
  • Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. Continue to explore opportunities throughout the process.
  • Continue to reassess your plan and your timing.
